Much like humans, dogs need to be vaccinated from various diseases. Whether it is the notorious parvovirus or the canine flu, your dog should receive vaccinations to prevent them from getting sick. It is important to know that some vaccinations can cause an array of various side effects, although most are not serious. Here are some common side effects from dog vaccinations that all pet owners should be aware of.

Allergic Reactions

It is nearly impossible to know whether a dog will have certain allergic reactions to vaccines until they show symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms of allergic reactions include weak muscles, sudden itching, fatigue or lost interest in playing, or swelling of the face. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, you should take him to the vet immediately. The veterinarian can administer antihistamines that should be able to combat the problem.

Heavy Shedding

If you notice your dog is starting to shed more heavily than usual, it may be a result of being injected with a live vaccine. This is actually quite common and nothing to be alarmed about, but it can happen. The shedding should subside within a week or so. If it does not, consult with your veterinarian for possible solutions.

Sneezing and Runny Nose

Within about three to four days after a vaccination, many dogs will develop a runny nose and have sneezing fits. This should only last for a few days and their mucus should be clear and loose. If the mucus becomes thicker or yellow in color, it could be the result of an infection. Upper respiratory symptoms are common in animals after they've received a vaccine, so it should pass and they should feel better within a few days afterwards.

Common Side Effects

You should pay careful attention to your dog at least a week after they've received any type of vaccination. Many animals experience some common side effects, which are usually just a result of their bodies adjusting to the medication. Here is a list of common side effects many dogs may experience up to a week after they've been vaccinated:

  • Diarrhea or loose stools
  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Sleeping more or behaving lethargic
  • Swelling or a bump at the injection site (this typically goes away within 24-48 hours)
  • Coughing or vomiting

If you notice any of these symptoms getting worse or lingering, it is important to take your dog to a veterinarian at a place like Delphos Animal Hospital just to ensure that it is a result of the vaccination and not something more serious.
